Trollers Ghill

Trollers Ghill is a secluded limestone gorge in the village of Appletreewick on the Yorkshire Dales. Long rumored to be the home to all sorts of evil mythical beasts it is best known for its Scandinavian Trolls who hide themselves in the gorge’s walls and throw rocks at unsuspecting passers by, and the infamous Yorkshire Barguest – a giant black, demon dog with huge claws and teeth that would prey on stray travelers by beheading them on the lonely dales. The legend of the Barguest is believed to have been the inspiration behind Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Sherlock Holmes novel ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

Valley of Desolation, Yorkshire Dales.Other interesting supposed residents of the Ghill include evil blood sucking gnomes, flesh eating boggarts and even deranged goblins. Needless to say, a walk through the gorge, via the wonderfully named Valley of Desolation, is planned for the May 2017 visit to Yorkshire.
